USA Calling Cards Archives

A Good Day For Pie

A Good Day for Pie,” was a short film shot in the fall of 2002. It was meant to be a “Calling Card,” film for its co-writer/producer; Alexander Martin and myself. Alas dreams of Hollywood glory have evaded both of us thus far. After writing our first feature length script together, it was suggested to us that make a short film to display our filmmaking talents. The concept was Alexander’s and after a month or so we managed to hack out a short script. It took us the rest of the summer to raise enough money and assemble a crew for production. Along with the many who sit at Starbucks and type away the next big blockbuster with dreams of being invited for lunch with Jerry Bruckheimer and dating Angelina Jolie, our dreams fizzled as not one of the many Film Festivals we entered would take our film. Today I look back at making “A Good Day for Pie,” with incredibly fond memories. Working with Mike Vass our Cameraman was a particular pleasure. Our lead Actor Adam Cosby was beyond committed (considering he was paid nothing) and turned in an excellent performance. The film was shot on 16mm and has a beautiful film look with precision editing by our Editor, Jean Denis Rouette. Shooting of the film took place in Mission, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack British Columbia. Alexander and myself called in many favors from many friends and family, and in the end spent somewhere between fifteen to twenty thousand dollars of our own money to complete the film. Alexander’s mom in particular, made

From www.learnin2minutes.com When we go to Europe or when any of my friends go to Europe, we always have the conversation before the trip – “so what are you going to do about phone calls?” Everyone knows that phone calls using your US carrier are ridiculously expensive and not everyone knows what to do about it. When I go to any country in Europe or South America, I always bring my T-Mobile (that’s important) cell phone with me. When I arrive in the country, I go to a phone store and buy a SIM card for about 20 euros. This SIM card gives me a local phone number in the country and lets me make cell calls locally to my friends and family at low low rates — no roaming. I also get to make phone calls back to the US at the local long distance rates — wildly cheaper than the US cell phone roaming rates.
