Even if you’re a USA fan in disappointment at the loss, you can’t help but be in awe at how well played this year’s Women’s World Cup final was between the USA and Japan. Even when it looked like the USA had it in the bag, the Japanese refused to give up. First it was Alex Morgan’s goal. We all thought that was it. Early on in the match, the USA was getting very good looks at the goal but none were going on. Japan, tied it up after 12 short minutes. Then, in the middle of extra time, the US executed another header off Abby Wambach. She’s made a science of those in this year’s Cup. 2-1 USA. Game over, right? Wrong. Japan didn’t give up and caught the USA napping on both occasions when they seemed to be playing not to lose. Instead of keeping up the pressure, the USA was playing the clock, trying to close it out. In America, there’s a phrase we use to describe those kinds of teams. Either they were playing to win, or they were playing not to lose. The USWNT looked like it was playing not to lose when it should’ve been trying to expand their advantage.
